a) Areas:
 
Alternative building materials, energy in buildings, structural masonry, ferrocement, precast concrete and brickwork products, recycling of solid industrial wastes, water and environment.
 
b) Significant research contributions:
 
Structural masonry:
 
Behaviour of soil-cement block masonry under compression and bending. Failure of full-scale walls. Water transport in bricks and brick masonry, bond enhancement and bond strength influence on compressive strength. Characterisation of properties of bricks/blocks, mortars and masonry. Developing design guidelines for stabilised block masonry.
 
Alternative building materials and technologies.
 
Design, development and field testing of soil block presses. Static compaction of soils. Relationship between moisture content, density and static energy and determination of OMC-static. Developed a semi-analytical model for estimating the energy losses in the boundary friction during static compaction of soils. Influence of soil composition on strength and durability of stabilised mud blocks. Optimisation the soil composition and stabiliser/clay ratios.
Developed testing methods for evaluating the durability of stabilised mud blocks Developed field testing methods for quality control, and optimisation of stabilised mud block production process. Steam cured lime stabilised blocks. Developed a process for the production of steam cured blocks using expansive/high clay soils, lime and fly ash.

Energy auditing and embodied energy in buildings, monitoring of soil and water quality in Vrishabavathi valley, Utilisation of industrial wastes such as fly ash, mining industry tailings for building products and design and development of bio-reactors for clean coffee effluents are some of the ongoing research studies.
